Description:

Bill Godlonton's "The Short Latigo Treatment" bronze sculpture limited edition 14/18.

This sculpture represents a typical ranger rider mounted on a horse that has spooked and is bucking through frustration or temper. The boy has to ride this horse all day, or at least until he is able to get to the wagon, or home ranch, to change mounts. His job is to bring this horse out of his bucking and get back to the range work that has to be done. Continuation of this performance is only playing the horse and rider out, and, in general, is a nuissance to the rest of the crew, spooking other horses and cattle. In order to accomplish this, he is standing up in his stirrups and popping the horse over the neckwith a short latigo, which, when it comes in contact with the horse, makes a resounding pop. This rider is using standard riding equipmnent, which includes an all puporse stock saddle, a hackamore, which indicates the horse is being started and has not advanced to the stage of being bitted. He has a mecate tucked in his belt, which he can hold onto should he part company with the horse, preventing him from being left on foot. He is in now way encouraging the horse to buck. His chaps are designed for service and protection; his boots are made with the undershot riding heel, not at all suitable for long periods on foot. His slicker is tied on behind his saddleand folded in such a way that all folds are vertical, rather than horizontal, to the direction in which water would run, thus preventing any chance of the slicker leaking. Very likely this cowboy would be what was known as the "Rough String Rider" on a round-up or ranch spread. The sculpture is in excellent condition.
