Description:

Bill Godlonton's "Throwing The Trip And Going Yonder" bronze sculpture limited edition 12/18.

This sculpture shows an old time range cowboy handling a mature range steer that has to be restrained for any one of many reasons - branding, doctoring, etc. To accomplish this, the rider positions himself behind and slightly to the left of the running steer. He makes his cast, catching the steer around the horns. He then throws the rope down to just above the steer's right hind hock. This is referred to as "Throwing The Trip". At the same time, he directs his horse to the left at a tangent to the path taken by the steer. It is from this action that the piece gets its name. As both steer and horse are travelling at top speed when they come to the end of the rope, it is not difficult to understand what happens to the unsuspecting steer - the result being he is thrown to the ground with sufficient force to create bewilderment. This gives the man time to slip off his horse and tie three of the steer's feet together with the rope he carries in his belt which is called a "pigging string". This action was used in the roping contests in rodeos, including the Calgary Stampede. However, due to pressure from the Humane Society, it was discontinued as a rodeo event, and to the best of my knowledge, was not used after 1919. The sculpture is in excellent condition.
