Description:

A rare and important masterwork by the renowned Inuk sculptor Davie Atcheleak of Iqaluit, Whale Bone Spirit is a monumental transformation carving in authentic whale bone that embodies the living relationships among human, sea mammal, and bird central to Inuit cosmology. Executed in 2004 and accompanied by its Government of Canada certification tag, this sculpture is of exceptional historical significance as Atcheleak’s final carved work before his passing.
The single section of whale bone has been imaginatively resolved into a dramatic wingspan measuring 39 inches wide, 12 inches deep, and 15.5 inches tall. At center, a hooded spirit head emerges from the bone’s natural cavity - on one side calm and smiling, on the reverse calling or singing with an open mouth - allowing the work to present two distinct presences depending on orientation. The arms extend laterally to terminate in fish-form heads, while a seabird in flight is carved beneath the body to serve as an organic support, creating a dynamic triad of beings in one unified form. Close inspection reveals confident chiseling and rasping, crisp scalloping to the hood rim, and sensitive modeling of the facial planes that preserve the characteristic porosity and variegated patina of whale bone. The underside bears the artist’s incised signature, and the original certificate records the key details - Davie Atcheleak - Iqaluit - 2004 - Whale Bone Spirit - verifying Canadian Inuk authorship. Visually commanding and sculpturally inventive, this museum-caliber piece epitomizes high Inuit art of Nunavut and would anchor any serious collection, public or private. An imposing presence for a gallery wall, foyer, or dedicated plinth, it is equally compelling from the serene side or the open-mouth side, rewarding display in the round.
Condition is consistent with age and material - natural surface pitting, tonal variations, and inherent fissures typical of whale bone are present - with no visible repairs.
Important note for buyers - marine mammal materials are subject to regional regulations. Export or cross-border shipment may require permits or may be restricted. Buyers are responsible for compliance in their jurisdiction.
Accompanied by the original Government of Canada certification tag confirming handmade creation by a Canadian Inuk artist, this is an extraordinary, last-of-life statement by a celebrated carver whose works are sought after by advanced collectors and institutions alike.
