Description:

This is an exceptional and rare original etching by the iconic Spanish master Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746–1828), titled “Bien tirada está” (“It is nicely thrown”) from his groundbreaking 1799 series Los Caprichos. This is Plate 17 in the series, with the number clearly etched in the upper right corner. The phrase “Bien tirada está” is inscribed in Goya’s elegant script beneath the image, exactly as issued.
Goya’s Los Caprichos is universally recognized as one of the most important and influential bodies of satirical prints in Western art history. A searing social critique veiled in allegory and dark wit, the series addresses superstition, vice, and the follies of 18th-century Spanish society. In this particular composition, a young woman lifts her skirt as an older woman seated on the floor evaluates her leg - a sly and provocative commentary on vanity, matchmaking, or prostitution. The chiaroscuro tones, dramatic composition, and psychological depth exemplify Goya’s pioneering genius in aquatint and etching.
This etching is in outstanding condition, with deep, richly inked tones, crisp plate marks, and no staining, foxing, or visible paper damage. The impression quality suggests an early edition, possibly from the late 18th to early 19th century. It is beautifully presented in a museum-quality double mat and an ornate black-and-gilt wood frame with fine carved detail, ready to hang and preserve.
Dimensions: Image size: 10 1/4" x 8" ; Framed size: 18 3/4" x 16 1/2"
Believed to be a 19th or 20th century edition.
