Lot 42
An extraordinarily compelling and historically rich collection of late 19th to early 20th century European and English shaving instruments and grooming apparatus, representing a remarkable cross-section of innovation in personal grooming technology from the Victorian through Art Deco periods. This museum-worthy grouping brings together rare examples from England, Germany, Switzerland, and the storied cutlery centers of Sheffield and Solingen.
The collection includes:
Lynch & Co. London “Perfection” Nasal Douche
A scarce Victorian glass nasal douche housed in its original labeled box, marked “Perfection Nasal Douche - Lynch & Co. - London,” with prize medal references. The hand-blown glass body with integral loop handle and internal plunger assembly survives intact. Original packaging significantly enhances collectability, as complete examples are increasingly difficult to source. Condition shows age-related discoloration and minor internal residue consistent with period medical glass, but no observed structural fractures. An evocative example of late 19th century personal medical apparatus.
Myatt “Daymark” Safety Razor - Made in England
A highly collectible early English safety razor set housed in its original fitted case. The interior lid retains the Myatt Daymark branding, and the razor features its distinctive engineered guard and adjustable components. Patent references and detailed engraved plate are present. Myatt razors are far scarcer than contemporary Gillette examples and are sought after for their mechanical ingenuity. Condition shows honest age wear and surface oxidation, but remains complete with accessories, elevating desirability.
Durham Duplex Straight Razor System
An early 20th century Durham Duplex safety/straight razor hybrid system in original case, accompanied by period blade packaging. The blade frame is stamped “Patented in Great Britain and Foreign Countries.” Durham Duplex razors represent an important transitional phase in shaving evolution and maintain a dedicated collector base. Condition shows typical light oxidation and handling wear; case remains presentable with legible embossing.
Heinr. Boker & Co. Baumwerk Solingen Straight Razors (Two Examples)
Two antique Solingen straight razors including:
A King Cutter example with decorated blade and original Boker marked case
A second Boker Solingen razor with cream scales and original branded sleeve
Both blades are marked “Heinr. Boker & Co. Baumwerk Solingen Germany.” Boker’s Tree Brand remains one of the most respected names in German cutlery. Solingen production is globally recognized for superior steel quality and historic craftsmanship. Blades exhibit oxidation and patina consistent with age but retain clear tang stamps and decorative elements.
Mitterdaniels Cutlers Suisse - “The Favorite” Straight Razor
A Swiss-marked straight razor stamped “Mitterdaniels Cutlers Suisse” and engraved “The Favorite.” Swiss straight razors are encountered less frequently than their English or German counterparts, adding a layer of scarcity and international appeal. Black scales remain intact. Blade shows age patination without structural compromise.
Rolls Razor - Imperial No. 2 – London
A complete Rolls Razor set housed in its iconic metal case with interior strop and honing mechanism. Marked “Rolls Razor - Made in England - Imperial No. 2 - London.” The case interior graphics remain vibrant. The exterior includes “Best Sheffield Steel” engraving and medallion detail. Rolls Razors remain a staple among collectors due to their self-contained stropping system and distinctive industrial design. Condition shows surface wear to the exterior case but retains internal components.
This collection presents a rare opportunity to acquire an assembled cross-section of European shaving history, spanning medical grooming tools, early safety razor innovation, Swiss cutlery production, Solingen master steel, and Sheffield industrial craftsmanship. The presence of original cases and packaging across multiple pieces substantially enhances collector desirability.
All items display age-appropriate wear including oxidation, patina, surface discoloration, and light case wear. No major structural damage observed. Blades have not been professionally restored and retain original patina. The grouping is offered as a collectible historical ensemble rather than shaving-ready instruments.
Individually, several components such as the Lynch Nasal Douche in original box, the Myatt Daymark set, and Swiss Mitterdaniels razor are increasingly scarce on the open market. As a complete curated grouping, this ensemble is notably uncommon.
A highly attractive acquisition for advanced collectors of antique razors, medical antiques, European cutlery, or early personal grooming history.
