Description:

Carved in 1994 by Louis Mahiktook of Taloyoak, Nunavut, Sedna is a finely conceived Inuit soapstone sculpture that embodies the powerful sea-mother of Arctic legend. Hand-carved from dark grey-black steatite with natural light mineral inclusions, the figure is presented in a compact, seated posture with upturned face and flowing hair, evoking Sedna’s liminal state between human and marine spirit. The simplified planes and soft modeling create a quiet monumentality at intimate scale, while the matte to low-satin finish brings out the stone’s organic veining and subtle tool work. The underside bears hand-incised marks consistent with the artist’s working practice, and the piece is accompanied by its original Government of Canada authenticity tag listing Louis Mahiktook - Taloyoak - 1994 - Sedna.
Dimensions 4 x 2 x 3 inches tall.
Condition is very good with minor scattered surface rubs at exposed high points and natural inclusions inherent to the stone, presenting beautifully with stable structure and no repairs.
This work represents classic Taloyoak carving aesthetics - compact form, expressive simplicity and richly patinated soapstone - and will appeal to advanced collectors of Inuit art seeking authenticated 1990s Nunavut sculpture.
