Description:

An exceptional limited edition graphic work from the Marina Picasso Collection, Chevalier en Armure presents one of Pablo Picasso’s dramatic and imaginative explorations of the knight and mounted warrior motif - a theme that appears throughout the artist’s later figurative works.

This striking composition captures a fantastical armored rider mounted upon an abstracted horse, surrounded by mechanical and symbolic elements rendered through Picasso’s unmistakable visual language. Fluid gestural linework intertwines with deep ink wash passages, creating a dramatic interplay between form, shadow, and narrative symbolism.

The composition reflects Picasso’s fascination with mythic figures, theatrical characters, and symbolic storytelling. The mounted knight appears almost mechanical in its construction, adorned with ornamental geometric elements and surreal details that evoke both medieval pageantry and modern abstraction. The left side of the composition contrasts this mechanical elegance with a powerful darkened figure rendered in expressive black washes, lending the entire scene a sense of theatrical drama.

This print was issued as part of the Marina Picasso Collection, the historic estate release organized by Picasso’s granddaughter Marina Picasso. Following the artist’s death, portions of the Picasso estate were carefully released through authorized print editions to collectors and galleries worldwide. Works from this collection remain highly sought after due to their official estate provenance and connection to Picasso’s original compositions.

The sheet is pencil numbered 164/500 in the lower margin, confirming its placement within a strictly limited edition of five hundred impressions. The print is pencil signed and titled Chevalier en Armure beneath the image.

An embossed blind stamp and circular estate seal further authenticate its release as part of the Marina Picasso Collection.

Printed on fine heavyweight mould-made printmaking paper, the work retains its full original margins and presents beautifully with strong contrast between the rich black tonal passages and delicate drawn lines.

The print is preserved in excellent collector condition. The sheet retains full margins and displays a clean, even paper tone. No foxing, staining, or discoloration is visible. The pencil signature, title, and edition number remain sharp and legible. The embossed seals are crisp and well defined. Overall presentation is highly suitable for gallery framing or inclusion in a serious Picasso graphic art collection.

While the edition was limited to 500 impressions, examples from the Marina Picasso Collection with intact embossing, full margins, and strong condition are increasingly scarce on the secondary market. Estate-issued Picasso prints continue to attract consistent collector demand due to their official provenance and connection to the artist’s original works.
