Description:

An exceptional and commanding example of late 20th century Venetian studio glass, this signed Murano sculpture by Renato Anatra for Vetri Artistici Arte ’80 embodies the fluid modernism and technical virtuosity that define the great Murano masters of the post-war and contemporary period.

Rising to an impressive 15 1/2 inches, the composition is conceived as a dynamic double-flame or cresting wave form, executed in luminous amethyst and lavender cased glass. Two elegantly twisting ribbon elements ascend from a substantial freeform base, their surfaces internally striated with delicate opaline feathering that creates depth, movement, and a remarkable play of light. The larger plume stretches upward in a confident arc, while the secondary curl rises in counterpoint, forming a sculptural dialogue of tension and balance.

The coloration transitions from richly saturated violet at the base to softer lavender tones within the upper ribbons, creating a visual gradient that enhances dimensionality. The glass is heavily cased, expertly annealed, and polished to a high gloss, demonstrating refined Murano craftsmanship. When illuminated, the interior ribbing glows with layered translucency, giving the sculpture a radiant presence ideal for gallery display, curated interiors, or serious Murano collections.

The underside retains a needle-etched signature reading R. Anatra Murano, and the original Vetri Artistici Arte ’80 Murano Made in Italy label remains affixed to the base. Signed Arte ’80 examples of this scale are notably more desirable than unsigned export pieces, particularly when both signature and label remain intact.

Renato Anatra, co-founder of Arte ’80 in 1980, is recognized for sculptural modernist forms that bridge traditional Venetian glassmaking with contemporary abstraction. His works are sought after by collectors of Murano art glass, Italian modern design, and high-end decorative sculpture.

Excellent overall condition. No chips, cracks, or restorations observed. Light surface scratching to the underside consistent with careful display and normal handling. Label shows minor edge wear consistent with age. The sculpture presents beautifully and displays exceptionally well.
