Lot 228
Robert Bateman's "Winter Bison" limited edition canvas signed and numbered 36/180. This canvas is in mint condition and has never been framed. "It says something positive about North Americans' ability to remedy sins of the past that the bison has been pulled back from the brink of extinction. This magnificent animal was deliberately slaughtered in an effort to control and subjugate the Plains Indian nations. These people used bison skins for clothing and teepees as well as the meat as a major source of their diet. This slaughter reduced numbers to a few hundred. At present there are approximately 350,000 bison. Some herds are totally wild but many are now used commercially as a more environmental method of meat production. Yellowstone Park is perhaps even more spectacular in the winter than it is in the summer. This is the setting I have chosen for a mature bull looking over the brink of a cliff, unaware how close his species came to being wiped out." - Robert Bateman
