Description:

An outstanding narrative Inuit carving by Simon Hiqiniq of Gjoa Haven, titled Hunter + Bear + Whale on Antler Base and dated 2001. This dynamic three figure tableau is carved in deep green to near black serpentine stone with crisp hand finishing and fine incised detailing. The hunter strides forward with arms extended, parka hem and cuffs neatly notched, inlaid round eyes, and an antler harpoon held aloft. A coiled line of wire is attached to the harpoon head in traditional hunting fashion. At center a prowling bear leans into the scene with low head and powerful forequarters, its broad back showing natural variegation and lighter green tonality that reads beautifully under light. Ahead of the bear, a stylized whale breaches on a discreet metal peg that lifts the form above the base and emphasizes movement. All three elements are mounted to an organic, sculptural base of caribou antler that presents as a fragment of Arctic floe and completes the sense of place. The interplay between the raised harpoon, the bear’s crouch, and the whale’s arc creates strong sightlines from every angle and exemplifies Gjoa Haven storytelling traditions in sculpture.

Material and craftsmanship details for the high end collector - serpentine stone for the hunter, bear, and whale provides a dense satin surface that takes a refined polish while retaining crisp edges at the carver’s cuts - caribou antler is used for the base and harpoon head - small metal pegs secure the whale and bear - inlaid round eyes lend character to both the hunter and the bear. The work is accompanied by its original Canadian Inuit art certification tag stating Simon Hiqiniq - Gjoa Haven - 2001 - Hunter + Bear + Whale on Antler Base.

Dimensions 11 1/2 in x 6 in x 6 in tall

Condition - presents very well with gentle handling wear appropriate to age - scattered minor abrasions and faint surface rubs to the serpentine visible under raking light - a few tiny nicks to the whale’s surface including a pinpoint mark near the dorsal area - light natural inclusions and color transitions to the bear’s haunches inherent to the stone - wire line to the harpoon lightly kinked - antler base with natural texture and age toning. All elements secure and stable.

Provenance and significance - certified Canadian Inuk artwork by a named Gjoa Haven carver - an early twenty first century example that captures the quintessential Arctic hunting narrative with exceptional sculptural rhythm and balance. This is a prime, display ready piece for collectors of Inuit art, Indigenous Canadian sculpture, Nunavut serpentine carvings, and museum quality narrative tableaus. Offered with its certification tag for confidence and future documentation.
